Use of a tablet attachment in tele-ophthalmology for real time video transmission from rural vision centers in a three tier eye-care network in India.

Tele-ophthalmology combines technology and medicine and can help facilitate the delivery of eye-care to rural areas. In the field of ophthalmology, a slit lamp biomicroscope is used as a fundamental diagnostic device. For a wider outreach, tele-ophthalmology is gaining interest as it saves the patient money and time to travel to seek opinion of an ophthalmologist. Smartphones and tablets are used currently to gather images of the patient’s eye and are sent to a consulting doctor for further diagnosis and plan of management.

The practice of clicking and sending images or videos using smartphone is used by many in the field of tele-ophthalmology however use of tablet is limited and the use of real time video transmission is evolving.
